Joan Konkel & Louis Vega Treviño
January 11 - 12
opening reception Friday, January 11 from 6 to 9PM
530 Burns Gallery is proud to present “Pulse: Joan Konkel and Louis Vega Treviño.” Renowned ultra-contemporary artists Konkel and Treviño explore visual optics in differing media-- metal and mesh and oil on canvas. The exhibition will bring together their work for the first time and will explore how color, line, and shape change, therefore altering the way the eye perceives each work. “Pulse” will run from January 11 through 21 with an opening reception Friday, January 11 from 6 to 9PM at 530 Burns Gallery, 530 Burns Ln Sarasota, FL.
Joan Konkel’s work begins with the two dimensionality of painted canvas. Konkel then manipulates woven metal mesh into the third dimension, which serves as a support for more layers of pigment. The space between the strands of mesh permits color and light to oscillates in and out, bringing to life the newfound movement of moire patterns. Each strand and each layer of color vibrates with the reflecting and refracting light.
Born and raised in San Fransisco, Konkel moved to Washington, DC, where she studied at The Corcoran School of Art and earned her MFA in sculpture from George Washington University. For her work, Konkel has received a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Annie Albers Designer Award in Washington DC.
Louis Vega Treviño’s oil paintings dramatically indulge the eye with bold color and distinctive geometric lines. The dramatic juxtaposition of colors fields from hot hues to cool whites creates a pulse of vibration from canvas to eye and back again.
Treviño’s paintings also reflect his deep understanding of art’s history. Recalling the innate power of feeling in the atmospheric paintings of Mark Rothko or Julies Oliski, Treviño cultivates a style that is uniquely and recognizably his own.
“Pulse” will run from January 11 through 21 with an opening reception Friday, January 11 from 6 to 9PM at 530 Burns Gallery, 530 Burns Ln Sarasota, FL. For further information and press inquiries, please contact Molly Lindberg at firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone at 941-951-0620.
