Artist – Gali Chehirian
The drawing or painting of symbols, ornaments, and images on serving wares is one of the most ancient of the arts. At various periods and at different places, this tradition has been the vehicle of sophisticated artistry, used to transform the humblest utilitarian vessels into objects of beauty.
The technique used in the creation of Gali’s tabletop glass art is Verre Eglomise, or reverse painting on glass. It has been used in Ancient Rome, the Middle Ages and Especially in Venice, during the Italian Renaissance.
The direct multi-color application by brush on the back of hand blown glass provides limitless possibilities for the interpretation of this centuries-old tradition. Moreover, it transforms and relates these most common of functional objects to the aesthetic demands of today.
